5Great backup camera with sensors
By William
I was hesitant to purchase this system since there were no reviews but it had everything I wanted - a good quality low-lux camera with three distance sensors. I always check electronics out before installing them and it was a good thing I did, the first unit was defective so I returned it for a replacement. I am a dedicated Amazon shopper and their return policy is one of the primary reasons. The replacement was shipped overnight even though I had purchased the first unit with 2-day shipping on my Prime account.I just installed the new unit recently so I don't have any long term experience with it. However, my first impressions are very favorable. I bought a unit from a competitor but was totally disappointed because it had a mirror monitor that washed out completely on a bright day and the license plate camera image was very poor in low light so the only time there was a viewable image was on an overcast day. This Boyo unit has a 3" monitor that easily mounted on top of my dash next to the A post. It doesn't block my view at all and is in exactly the right place for me to switch between looking at it and at the driver's side rear view mirror. The license plate frame is chromed heavy metal and should last for many years. It comes with its own bolts, nuts, and washers so you have to be able to reach behind the bumper to install them. However, they are much more secure so the frame is less likely to be stolen.I wanted a wired unit because I have heard horror stories of images breaking up on some brands of wireless systems. Of course, routing the wire through split loom tubing was the hardest part of the job but should last the life of the unit. The camera does very well in all light conditions. The monitor image that I uploaded was made at dusk so the colors aren't as vibrant as they are during the day. The camera's vertical angle can be adjusted and locks in place with a hex screw so it isn't likely to vibrate out of adjustment. The best part of this system are the 3 distance sensors. There is one for left, middle, and right. They actually work very well. As you get close to an object, dashed lines begin to appear under the correct directional letter. When you get closer, a tone starts to sound and then becomes louder when you are getting too close. The other manufacturer's unit didn't have the sensors and it was impossible to tell just how close you were to objects. The whole purpose of these back up systems is to allow you to avoid hitting something behind you or to get really close to an object. Knowing that an object is back there but having no idea how close you are makes the other systems almost useless. If you have never installed a backup camera system, you need to know that you have to connect the positive power input to a 12v line on your vehicle that is powered whenever you put the transmission into reverse. You could connect the unit to an accessory line. However, the camera, sensors, and monitor would be powered any time the ignition was turned to accessory or to "on." In some states, it is against the law to have a monitor that can be seen by the driver when the vehicle is in forward motion.Finding the proper wire for the positive power input can be a little tricky. In my case, I connected it to a wire from the relay under the hood that goes to the back up lights and the trailer electrical connector. The Boyo VTC433H allows you to connect to power at either the front or back of the vehicle. Many people trace a wire from the driver's side back up light and connect to it. If your vehicle has a 7-pin trailer electrical connection, the center pin MAY provide reverse lamp power. The only other electrical connection is to a ground and that is simple enough on any modern vehicle. BTW, the Boyo unit comes with a 12v tester to help you locate the proper wire. That was a very nice and unexpected bonus. The unit did not come with an inline fuse. I consider that to be a major design flaw and would never install an electronic device on a vehicle without a dedicated fuse. However, you can purchase a 12v inline fuse holder at any auto parts store. Most of those come with a fairly high amperage fuse. If so, replace the fuse with a low amp fuse somewhere in the 1 to 3 amp range. The wiring has two connectors - one for the camera and one for the monitor. They are interchangeable so it doesn't matter which one you plug into the camera or the monitor. My installation is on a crew-cab truck and I was worried that the wire might be too short. However, there was about a foot to spare. Since the connectors are non-standard, I would have had a problem splicing the wire if it had been too short. The only adjustment on the monitor is the volume of the warning tone. There is no provision for adjusting the brightness or contrast. The factory setting appears to be okay but I would prefer the ability to make adjustments if needed. All things considered, I have given the Boyo 5 stars. There is a limited one-year warranty but my experience with getting these companies to honor the warranty has not always been successful.
