5EXACTLY What I Was Looking For!
By tlovesm
So I wanted to build a fairly nice system consisting of components in front, back and a sub in the rear. I've built systems in the past using 8" subs (1) and thought I'd go all out and get a 12W6V2. I built a box to JL specs, hooked it up to an HD 600/1 and was immediately blown away at the lows capable from this sub. The JL was capable of producing very low frequencies and just rattling the snot out of my car. But one thing was missing - sound quality; at least what I was used to using 8" subs in the past. I spent weeks trying to tweak my JL (used a sealed box) and just couldn't get it to my liking. It's huge and easily overpowered my system.I decided to go back to an 8 and researched extensively. I found this sub and researched it and couldn't find anything bad about it. I read that it can produce excellent sound quality, but output can be weak. So I decided to get two and build a new box with .31 cubic inch of sealed space on each side. I stuffed these into my new box, hooked up my JL HD 600/1 (series and then parallel) and was IMMEDIATELY thrown back by the quality and drive. These subs hit VERY HARD and accurate. I'm not getting the lows the JL gave me, but I don't want that. Instead, I get hard, accurate bass that is fast. I listen to a lot of dance music with a lot of fast, hard hitting beat and these subs give me exactly what I want. I also listen to some metal and hard rock and they sound excellent with this, too. These subs are HEAVY! Two subs and my box weigh about 65 pounds (and the box is small!). I used 3/4" MDF on all sides and doubled that for the front. The mounting holes are really close to the basket, so be careful when mounting it. Again, I hooked them up using series internally (because they are dual voice coil) and then parallel to my amp, giving me a net load of 2ohm.With the JL - I've heard of people getting excellent sound quality, etc - but I could never get it. The JL is just huge and at 44, I felt that it was over-powering for my JL ZR's and C5's. Maybe I was doing something wrong - who knows...but I do know that it took very, very little tunning to make these TC's sound great!
